Nyx

I awoke to the boat gently rocking in the middle of the ocean, with me collapsed on the boat’s wooden bottom. I picked myself up slowly, cataloging any potential injuries. Everything seemed okay and nothing ached, but still, a weight of dread seeped over my waking consciousness.

Something wasn’t right.

I sat up and glanced myself over. No visible injuries, no marks that might give any clues. I didn’t want to disturb her, but a creeping, sinking feeling had me standing and looking around the boat as if I’d find Eos simply floating around the water waiting for me to wake up.

Eos? I asked then said aloud, “Eos? Can you hear me?”

It was definitely dread that crawled its way through me, grasping at my limbs as it worked its way around my body to settle in my gut. But an emptiness weighed on me, too. Somewhere in my chest, over my heart. Earlier today, I might have attributed it to missing Zavian—my other half—but there was another half of me whose lack of presence worried me just the same.

Eos? Dammit, answer me. Don’t tell me we’re too late. We couldn’t be too late. I refused to believe it.

“I’m… here…”

Eos’s words, although hardly convincing, still sent a wave of relief washing through me.

Thank the gods. Eos, what happened?

“No time… Swim down.”

My brow furrowed. I gripped the edge of the boat and looked overboard. Peering through the Atlantic’s dark waters proved impossible. Still, I knew what she was pointing out. It’s here? Your grandmother’s home?

Eos’s response never came. More than far away, her voice seemed weak and quiet. Almost as empty as the feeling in my chest.

Eos was almost gone.

Hang in there, Eos, I said, sounding way more demanding than I’d intended. But for once, I was the one giving orders. I’m going to swim down and find your grandmother. We’ll get you your body back. Then we can retake Alexandria and raise Atlantis just like you wanted. You hear me? If you don’t make it, the Reaper wins.

“Hurry… Nyx…”

Gods. With every word, she sounded less and less like a soul bound to mine and more like my own mind playing tricks on me, whispering nonsense in my ear.

Stay with me. I’ll get you your kingdom back. And then your mate.

Dax would kill me if I lost Eos now.

Exhaustion pulled on my eyelids. I’d yet to have a full, restful night’s sleep in days. Truthfully, it felt like it’d been a whole lot longer than that. Add to it that Eos had definitely used some of her powerful blood magic—I could feel its effects on my half-fae body—and I felt like I might collapse back into the boat at any moment.

But there wasn’t time. As Eos had said, if I didn’t hurry, it’d all be lost. Everything we’ve been working for. Going to the Autumn Court. Stealing from them. Cyra’s life was on the line just as much as any other fae stuck in Alexandria. Zavian’s and Dax’s lives too.

I wouldn’t fail Eos.

I was not going to fail at all.
